Vince Zampella, who helped create the wildly popular franchise Call of Duty, has died in a car accident in the state of California aged 55.

The tragic news was verified by Electronic Arts, the publisher that controls Respawn Entertainment, the development studio which he helped establish.

The influential industry figure died after his automobile collided and was engulfed in flames on a freeway in Los Angeles on Sunday, as reported by.

"We are facing a heartbreaking loss, and we stand with Vince's loved ones, those closest to him, and all those touched by his work," a spokesperson for Electronic Arts commented.
