Van de Ven Double Halts The Toffees' Unbeaten Streak at New Stadium

The Tottenham defender found the net twice as Spurs extended their unbeaten run in away games in the Premier League and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the tally five minutes after the defender's first goal, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent stops to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising Craig Pawson to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's team up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton stay in 14th position and are half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in duties at each end of pitch

Following a drab weekday display in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a mere two shots on target, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - added his second in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defensive duties, partnering effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair handled excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have faded slightly and fans flocked to the exits after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a major worry for the manager, but their striker situation are.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two recognised centre-forwards - had scored just one league goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to add to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having space and time to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, too, failed to influence the game after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of chance. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped dangerous balls into the Tottenham box.
