A campaign is aiming to propel a Palestinian lullaby to the top of the UK charts. The effort aims to provide aid to communities in Gaza while also spotlighting Palestinian culture and creativity.
Composer and producer Brian Eno, who features on the track, stated that the song titled Lullaby represents a opportunity to support Palestinians over the Christmas period. He acknowledged the potential for an unexpected chart success.
“It would be incredible if that came to pass, yes,” he stated. “I wouldn't be completely disheartened if it doesn't manage to, holiday tracks are a unique phenomenon.”
Palestinian singer Nai Barghouti, who features in the adaptation of a traditional lullaby called Yamma Mwel El Hawa, explained the song's powerful central theme.
“The song holds a deeply meaningful spot for countless listeners,” Barghouti explained. “It’s basically saying that I would choose to perish with honor than spend my life without freedom. That’s the main theme of the song; we desire to exist a dignified life that we merit as a people.”
The song was recorded following a solidarity show held in September. First conceived to be done as a live recording, the rendition was cut from the show due to the event running long.
The notable list of artists appearing on Lullaby includes a range of acclaimed names from the industry. All were part of the benefit event, which reportedly raised a substantial amount for humanitarian aid.
Lullaby was brought to life by a group of music creators. The song blends a combination of the original Arabic with new English lyrics.
The group managing the initiative have clarified that their objective is to collect the highest amount for a dedicated fund. These proceeds will be distributed to Palestinian causes through an non-profit partner.
“We don’t have a rigid aim,” a spokesperson commented. “We will pursue whatever we can get. Obviously, the greater the amount, the better. It all goes out to those in need in Gaza.”
The situation in the region was characterized as its extreme devastation, with a huge proportion of property said to be in ruins or severely impacted.
“In that context, a handful of millions doesn’t make a massive dent. But I think what truly matters is first of all raising awareness for this issue and proving that another narrative exists.”
The track is set to be released at the end of the week. Additionally, a full recording of the charity concert will be made ready to watch on a digital service from mid-December.
