When an 18-year-old makes Real Madrid a historic moment in a key Champions League match against City, it inevitably draws praise and the spotlight.
During his first start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the fifteen-time Champions League winners secured a three-nil round of 16 first-leg advantage at the Bernabeu.
The young player, who also had his club debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then helped the Madrid side defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek return to confirm a last eight place.
At 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder was the club's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating star Vinicius Jr's previous mark by 10 days.
The midfielder is the latest to come through from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most exciting young players.
He joined Madrid from CD Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe's academies, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a positive impact.
Pitarch progressed to the reserve side and it was in a pre-season game in which they faced the senior squad, then managed by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who took over from the previous coach in the new year.
Spanish media would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," adding he stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, personality and determination he added to the team.
During the summer of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso called up Pitarch to train with the senior squad and gave him minutes in pre-season.
Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the turning point in his career as he was introduced as a late substitute in both ties against the Portuguese side that led to the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I have dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the very first time I began playing football, every day you head to training and every day you play a match," said Pitarch following his first appearance.
"I have just fulfilled my ambition with the best team in the world and in the best competition."
Given a first start in La Liga against his former club - where he spent four years after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his place for the next four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opening.
Pitarch has taken it with displays that have defied his youth and inexperience.
"He is a very quick footballer, and you can see what he's capable of," remarked the coach. "He is extremely dynamic, with excellent stamina, effort and movement."
Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his coach.
"His greatest quality is his character," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.
"I understand people are surprised to watch him start in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had total trust in him to perform his normal game.
"Thiago will continue to get chances with the first team. It's a pleasure to have a player like him."
Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and was raised fully immersed in Spanish football, progressing through youth setups before joining Real Madrid's famous youth academy.
He possesses dual Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, giving him the choice to represent either country at senior international level.
According to international regulations, players may represent different countries at youth level without being locked in, with the final decision only binding once they play in a official full international.
Pitarch has featured for the Spanish national team at youth level, turning out for both the U19 and U20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain made it to the quarter-finals.
Despite this, he has not yet decided to any senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with interest.
In a recent interview, the player said: "I have not taken my final decision yet. My situation is great with Spain, but I will reach a conclusion in the near future."
His situation echoes that of other dual nationality talents such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Yamal. Whereas teenage Lamine chose Spain, Diaz opted to represent the Atlas Lions.
For now, his attention is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and rewarding his manager's belief.
He played over an hour in the 2-1 win at the Etihad, which completed a five-one aggregate success and a last-eight tie with the German champions.
He was replaced by another academy player in Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in younger players to help the team pursue trophies to come.
After his impressive impact so far on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to be a central figure in that.
"The manager treats me the identical way. We handle it very naturally. I attempt not to think about it too much - I have to deserve my playing time on the pitch," he said after the win at Etihad Stadium.
