During the fall season, Adult Swim saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the network launched a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. In an era often marked by bleakness, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and propelled it a breakout hit.
In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and championed its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about observing this endearing family go about their simple existence.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing cynical streak. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.
“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well catalyze that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to experience the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
