The co-founders of the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has stated how parent company the multinational conglomerate stopped the launch of a new Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.

The entrepreneur, that co-founded the company alongside Jerry Greenfield, revealed how he will independently develop the controversial product as part of an individual series highlighting issues the company has been prevented from speaking out about.

Ongoing Conflict Between Creators versus Parent Company

The recent development intensifies the ongoing conflict between the internationally recognized ice cream maker and its corporate parent, the British packaged goods corporation that has owned the ice cream brand since 2000.

The co-founders maintain that Unilever and their ice cream division the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's from "honouring its social mission".

Watermelon Flavor as a Symbol of Support

The entrepreneur stated via social media how he is creating a new watermelon-flavored sorbet, asking for consumer ideas regarding the product's name plus potential ingredients.

“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder commented from a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored ice cream that calls for lasting ceasefire in Palestine while demanding repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”

This particular fruit has emerged as an emblem for support for Palestinians because of its coloration, that match the colors in Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.

Historical Activism and Current Developments

In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of its products in territories under Israeli control, resulting in the parent company transferring their Israel business over to a local licensee, thus allowing ongoing distribution in disputed territories.

The new dessert series is being developed under Ben's Best, the activist ice cream brand that originally established several years back to support former US presidential candidate Senator Sanders via the product "Bernie's Back".

Management Changes plus Future Intentions

Mr. Cohen revealed that he plans to develop additional ice cream flavors that address concerns that the company was silenced from speaking about openly by Unilever.

The announcement comes after co-founder Jerry Greenfield stepped down his position at Ben & Jerry's in September, following decades with the organization, citing worries regarding how its independence was compromised following corporate moves to curb its social activism.

At that time, Mr. Cohen stated that "Jerry has a really big heart and this conflict with our parent company was breaking it."

“My conscience compels me to keep working inside the company to fight for its independence ensuring that the company can fulfill the social mission, the principles which it was founded on while upholding for over 40 years," he explained to journalists.
