Antony Price, the influential style architect behind some of the most iconic looks favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.

Price was best known for his defined forms and performative fashion, such as the light-hued ensembles that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."

This news arrives less than a month after he debuted his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Pioneering Career

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger sported during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in crafting body-hugging looks made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.

During the nineties, he commenced designing ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including several ensembles for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.

With a vocation that covered half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Theatrical Flair: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The fashion world says farewell to a true visionary whose impact on style and culture remains deeply ingrained.
