The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Reveal a New Divinity, Labeling it Their Largest RPG Ever

The anticipation around the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The mystery is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is creating a brand-new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer packed with intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.

A Different Direction

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian clarified that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing suggests that the team could be crafting a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it kicked off the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—qualities that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths that are viable if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also notoriously permissive, allowing players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be solved in a variety of manners, frequently in lateral fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can look forward to a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
