Biding two decades for another chance to acquire a prized business purchase is a luxury not afforded to most business leaders. The Rothermere family, however, adopts a more relaxed stance to time.
While most business boards draw up five-year plans, the Rothermeres, having built a feared media conglomerate over over one hundred years, are accustomed to planning in terms of generations.
This was in the year 2004 that the 4th Viscount Rothermere, the distinguished owner of the Daily Mail, was unsuccessful in his attempt to acquire the Telegraph titles.
By Rothermere’s assessment, the failure delighted Rupert Murdoch because it would have created a portfolio of conservative newspapers powerful enough to challenge the “unique political leverage” of Murdoch’s own titles.
The softly spoken Rothermere, however, was able to adopt a patient strategy. The publications were again put up for sale in 2023. Since then, two potential buyers have come and gone, both after internal Telegraph revolts over their appropriateness. Rothermere has now swooped.
As a result, the 57-year-old has reinforced his family’s obsession with UK press, after his ancestors bought, sold and smashed together some of the most prominent publications of their era.
“Lord Rothermere has got a business head, but he’s not sharply business minded,” said a media analyst. “It may sound sentimental, but his dedication to journalism is authentic.” I suspect internally, they’ve wanted to unite media businesses that serve centre-right audiences for decades.”
Huge issues remain before the hereditary peer’s corporate entity can secure the publications. In addition to competition and media plurality concerns, staff members are questioning how he will stump up the half-billion-pound price tag. Nevertheless, Rothermere’s hopes of establishing a conservative media powerhouse have been rekindled.

Upon his father's passing in 1998, Rothermere is said to have had about 20 minutes upon arriving back from the hospital before business communications began, effectively commencing his chairing of DMGT, aged 30.
In the past, he sold off profitable parts of the business to concentrate on the Mail and other newspaper assets. The Telegraph bid is the most recent indication of his keenness to reaffirm the family’s media stronghold. “This is a 20-year plus target acquisition,” commented a ex-staffer. “He doesn’t want the Mail as the only newspaper asset he leaves for his son Vere.”
Rothermere’s decision to delist the company in 2021 has also facilitated the acquisition attempt. “I don’t have to justify myself to anybody,” he said shortly after the decision.
Attempting to alter the Telegraph’s editorial line would be uncharacteristic. A former editor informed that both he and his predecessor meddled in content.
“That is the main reason why I turned down very enticing offers to edit the Times and the Telegraph,” he said. “Frankly, I simply didn’t believe that other proprietors would give me that freedom. It’s difficult to overstate how valuable that freedom is to an editor.”
He continued, “Fleet Street is littered with the corpses of sacked editors who, amid crashing circulations, tried to please their proprietors rather than their readers. The Rothermeres have always understood that. It’s a sacred principle for them that editors are given total editorial autonomy, with the brutally clear understanding that they are dismissed if they produce poor papers.”
Amid the UK's political landscape appearing to shift to the right, there are inevitable political concerns about uniting the Mail and Telegraph at a time when each have been increasing reporting of Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party.
Many liberal politicians contend the Mail’s abrasive style has become more pronounced in recent times, pointing to its championing of narratives pushed by Farage on migration and the “woke” agenda. Some believe the Telegraph has undergone an even more radical shift, often running far-right opinion pieces that go beyond those of the Mail.
There are numerous questions about how someone even with Rothermere’s resources has the cash. Most media analysts estimate that a more realistic valuation for the titles is in the range of £350m, but Rothermere is willing to pay a premium.
DMGT does not have a ready £500m, the price reportedly demanded by the existing owners as they seek to recoup the debt that gained it control of the assets two years ago.
He has committed to maintain the Telegraph and Mail titles independent in content, viewing them as catering to distinct readerships – broadsheet and mid-market. Nonetheless, there are concerns inside both publications over reductions and the future strategy, given the condition of the press sector.
Once more, the family has shown a willingness to take radical steps when required. When Rothermere’s father was attempting to save an struggling Daily Mail in 1971, he combined it with the Daily Sketch, brutally sacking hundreds of journalists in the process.
A government minister has asked that the involved parties present the proposed deal to the authorities within three weeks, but the outstanding issues will mean the saga rumbles on well into next year.
