So, how was this year in your home? Was it truly wonderful as people post on social media? Packed with A-grades for the children and riotous dress-up celebrations for the grownups? Or was it a ocean of disappointment with only rare enjoyable flotsam? And was any of it genuine, or have we all become digitally altered AI slop beings with celebrity smiles?
I've assembled the family for a reflection, willing or unwilling, to reflect on the crucial thing in twelve months: what titles we were obsessed with the most. Let's get started:
Just Dance 2024
"Why can't you pick just one?"
"You can't expect my personal ranking."
Meanwhile, on mobile, she’s been playing Cityscapes and "searching for reasonable healthcare."
"In the game?"
"In real life."
Overwatch
"I have no interest in games on my phone." He was offended that I even asked. Fair enough.
Resident Evil Biohazard
She's attempting to get into theatre school, but when she stepped away from the mic, she was tackling Resident Evil. She also went on in great detail about her achievements on The Sims, where the Shark has a successful utopia with far better healthcare than her older sibling has outside the game.
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She started the year at sixty percent completion and finished the year at 82%. It's a long haul not a sprint for her. Her mobile diversion: something called Woodle, where you have to extract pins.
Minecraft
Any time I see my adult son playing Minecraft, I give him a hard time like a cross between a classic comedy bit. When he objects, I reply that I am engaging in this to build character so he can mature and play games for adults. It’s a very Scottish father/son relationship.
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
There was no contest for this one. She is a machine. Superior than I was at Dancing Stage MegaMix in my prime.
Marvel Snap
It was in a league of its own to the hours I spent on this remarkably well-crafted deck building wizard’s poker, with its regularly updated range of cards and game variations.
Marvel Snap
The catch about games that endlessly add to their range is you wake up one day and see it is all just an attempt to lure you into fear-of-missing-out driven microtransactions. So affection became resentment halfway through the year and it got uninstalled.
Doom: The Dark Ages
Glorious reinvention of a legendary franchise. Immersive atmosphere from the off. I wish I could eviscerate my demons so effectively in real life.
Blue Prince
I decline to rush this gorgeous, distinctive game and I just was short on the mental bandwidth to give it what it needed earlier this year. With family visits over the festive period, I aim to experience this in the wee small hours after evening drinks.
Balatro
I'm aware Balatro was last year's surprise hit, but I was late to it. And it is incredible. It just gets each element right. The core concept is a brilliant concept, but the powers behind the different wild cards are so creative it has become a game I literally would play constantly. Throw in the charm of the card design, and this is an definite peak of gaming. I dream of being stuck in a small space for hours just so I have an opportunity but play it.
Outer Worlds 2
I experienced a minor pile-on when I mentioned how a glitch in another game damaged the experience for me, but that other title is still a gargantuan gaming achievement in terms of overall polish – which I recognized even more after playing Outer Worlds 2. So thank you to the individual who took the time to send a message to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "missing the point". I present that in the exact way, because I respect the passion, and they are obviously an excellent judge of character.
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Sure. Give me a brutally difficult non-linear thing and don’t tell me guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "look around". What a joy. I get that it has great art and is perfection if you are into the genre, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I want less of in my current stage of life. I was around back when most games were like this, and my patience is gone. It was acceptable when I was a kid, but so was many questionable things.
Close call between corporate partnerships that caused concern, and high launch costs. Both ethically dubious and unpleasant.
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all sound good names shouted from the garden at bedtime.
Right Thumb Joint. Honestly. I don’t know if it’s because of video games or phone use, but it aches like the mines of sulphur in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs protected back in the 90s.
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to make 2026 last until the heat death of the universe.
The Witcher 4.
