New York Unveils Reporting Tool for Citizens to Report ICE Videos Following Arrests of 4 US Citizens

New York state AG has rolled out a fresh digital platform urging locals to share images and footage of federal immigration enforcement throughout the state. This step comes just a day after a significant enforcement action disrupted Chinatown in Manhattan, prompting mass protests.

American Citizens Arrested In Raid

A congressional representative revealed during a Wednesday press conference that four US citizens were taken into custody and kept for "almost a full day" following the enforcement action. Protests occurred in NYC on consecutive evenings.

"Each citizen deserves to live without fear," state officials stated in a release.

"For those who saw and captured immigration enforcement recently, I ask you to submit that material with my office. We are committed to examining these submissions and evaluating any violations of law."

Portal Features

The platform provides spaces to submit visual evidence of the incident, along with a area to note where it occurred. When submitting, individuals must tick a option that states that "the office may use any documents, photographs, or videos in a official report, such as in a legal proceeding or public report."

Details of the Chinatown Raid

The Chinatown raid, which witnesses say involved over fifty federal agents, happened in a famous neighborhood of the city where imitation handbags, accessories, jewelry and additional items are regularly available in large quantities – frequently to visitors.

Footage of Tuesday's raid show several hooded and equipped federal agents zip-tying and detaining a man, and forcing aside witnesses. Crowds of locals followed the officers down the sidewalks. An armored truck was noticed moving along the urban roads.

Political Response

During a midweek briefing organized with the New York immigrant rights coalition, congressman Dan Goldman, a lawmaker, said that four American citizens were arrested by immigration for about 24 hours and that there were "no conditions where nationals should be taken for no reason." He noted the persons were freed on the following day with no charges filed.

"The intent is obvious here. It is not to take criminals off the street," the congressman stated. "This constitutes a military-style operation to create conflict. It is purely a justification to generate turmoil for this administration to utilize the armed forces to stop conflict that they have created."

Extensive Outcry

Anger over the immigration operation rapidly grew – all three political contenders criticized the incident, along with Governor Kathy Hochul.

"Once again, the Trump administration selects heavy-handed tactics that instill panic, rather than security. It must stop," one mayoral candidate wrote.

The city's advocacy organizations expressed outrage also.

"Immigration agents raided the neighborhood with tactical trucks, masked agents and protective equipment to go after street vendors working to survive. This raid had nothing to do with public safety and focused completely on frightening communities and communities," remarked the head of a rights organization.

ICE Policies

Agency rules prohibits the detention of US citizens and the bureau has stated it does not take into custody US citizens. Nevertheless, investigative journalism has revealed that over 170 US citizens have been detained unlawfully by federal agents during the period of the present government.

Current Situation

Enforcement actions have been rising in frequency in the state and around the country lately.

A recent action in the city center was the initial documented operation on an refuge facility of the current administration. Rallies targeting federal operations are widespread along with claims of force and cruel conditions.

Recently, a document submitted by civil rights groups claimed medical neglect of pregnant women in ICE facilities.
