New York City Mayor Eric Adams has announced his plan to support Andrew Cuomo in the forthcoming election for mayor, even after an extended period of disagreements between the two Democratic figures.
Only weeks ago, the mayor had strongly criticized Cuomo, describing him as a “deceptive figure and a liar” and accusing him of having “a history of marginalizing Black political contenders.” However, in a new development, Mayor Adams made a U-turn, stating he now intends to campaign alongside the former governor in neighborhoods where he holds strong support.
“It is crucial to mobilize the Black and brown communities that have suffered from gentrification on how critical this race is,” Adams remarked.
He added, “They have watched their housing costs rise in terms of gentrification and they have been ignored in those areas, and I plan to visit to those neighborhoods and talk directly with community leaders and organizations and I will appear with the governor in those neighborhoods and get them involved.”
The election battle has so far been dominated by the struggle between the former governor and democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, whose increasing popularity has made headlines worldwide and represented aspirations for a revitalized progressive wing of the Democratic party.
During a recent candidate forum, both Mamdani and Republican nominee his conservative opponent announced they would refuse Adams’s endorsement if offered.
Earlier this year, Adams had begun his re-election campaign as an independent after being indicted on federal corruption charges which were later dismissed in return for his assistance with government enforcement actions across New York City.
During a unrelated press conference on Thursday, the mayor answered reporters asking about the endorsement plan by saying, “I'm meeting Andrew this evening.”
This development came a day after the two politicians were spotted sitting courtside together at the New York Knicks’ season opener at Madison Square Garden, which took place right after a heated mayoral debate.
