Huge plumes of black smoke were seen rising from an area close to the main base of the American Fifth Fleet in Manama, Bahrain. The full scale of any impact is uncertain and the United States has not commented.

Missile Defenses Activated

In other parts of the Middle East, the United Arab Emirates, the State of Qatar and Kuwait - which all house American military installations - reported they have intercepted incoming projectiles in their air space.

In the Qatari capital, the Qatari Ministry of Defence said it had successfully engaged a number of projectiles apparently targeting the al-Udeid air base, the largest American base in the region.

Iran's Declared Retaliation

Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated it was striking US bases and assets as part of military campaign "Truthful Promise 4", in retaliation for the attack on the Islamic Republic initiated by the United States and its ally Israel on Saturday.

That preceding assault - launched at around 06:15 GMT - has so far focused on areas associated with the Tehran's leadership, with President Trump calling on the people of Iran to rise up against the leadership.

Regional Fallout

In the State of Israel, sirens were heard nationwide after the Israel Defense Forces said it had detected an incoming Iranian missile barrage.

The defence ministry of the UAE said in a statement that the nation has been targeted by a "a blatant attack involving Iranian ballistic missiles".

"Emirati air defenses engaged the projectiles with high efficiency and shot down a number of missiles," the statement continued.

The statement noted wreckage landed in a residential area in Abu Dhabi, causing some material damage and the death of one civilian.

The US Air Force is stationed at Al Dhafra Air Base, to the south of Abu Dhabi, along with the Emirati Air Force.
