The distinctive yellow-fronted apartment block in the background assisted us verify the footage.

We are analyzing images and video circulated earlier today that depict the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that authorities in Russia say fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.

Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he succumbed of his injuries. A probe is under way.

Our starting point to verify the site from which the images originated was based on social media reports saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.

Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to match the unique yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building seen in the video.

Identifying other structures, streetlights and the road configuration verified where the footage were taken.

We also checked that the videos were recent and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
