Individuals from across the political spectrum and the Hollywood industry are coming together to condemn Donald Trump for his statements following the tragic deaths of esteemed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
Following the discovery of the couple deceased at their Brentwood residence, Trump posted on his platform to describe the deceased director as "tortured and suffering". The post, he asserted Reiner's demise was "because of the anger he provoked others through his massive, relentless, and untreatable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post then pivoted to self-praise, contrasting Reiner's alleged "raging obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".
Authorities have since confirmed the arrest of the Reiners' adult son, Nick, on charges related to homicide in relation to the case. It is reported his bail was set at a significant sum.
The response to Trump's post was swift and scathing.
This is a vile and vile comment,” said actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, also criticized the statements. She pointed to prior rhetoric from Trump about political violence, asking, "Do you have no shame? Is it possible to get any lower?"
California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly wrote, "He is a disturbed man."
Mirroring this sentiment, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "What a despicable piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "Trump has just lost it. Now saying the Reiners brought on their own demise because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."
A number of Republican elected officials also expressed disapproval.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or political enemies". Greene also mentioned struggles with addiction and mental health some families face.
Another Republican congressman, Thomas Massie, called Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disrespectful" given the circumstances. He publicly challenged members in his party to justify the comments.
Rob Reiner was long a vocal critic of Donald Trump. During a past conversation, he argued Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the office. He had also warned about the risks of autocracy if Trump return to power.
"We see autocracy on the rise around the world," Reiner said. "Should the United States crumble, there’s a danger that democratic systems collapse around the world."
Regardless of his strong opposition, Reiner had previously shown "complete revulsion" and denounced political violence unequivocally after the killing of a different individual.
Adding a element of past connection, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once recounted the story of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's request for "special hairspray" as being photographed on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
