California is Fully Free of Drought for the First Instance in 25 Years.

After a quarter-century span, every region of the state is facing water scarcity. This significant achievement follows challenging years marked by below-average rain that intensified fire dangers and pressured its huge agribusiness.

A Map Shows No Dryness

The latest assessment from the federal monitoring program confirmed that California in its entirety is free from dry or drought conditions. This development was driven by a period of significant storms that topped up major reservoirs like Shasta and Oroville far beyond their typical levels.

“If you’re 25 or younger you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” noted a climate scientist.

Following Powerful Weather to Rainy Seasons

The journey here involved severe and lethal winter storms that struck the state in the not-too-distant past, leading to extensive inundation, power outages, and fatalities. Even though those events helped ease the drought, they fell short of ending it.

Even into late December, pockets like northeastern California were considered experiencing dryness. Subsequent downpours at the onset of 2026 washed away those remaining dry spots.

A Crucial Snowpack Remains a Concern

But, hydrologists note that being out of drought does not mean being out of the woods. Recent measurements of the high-elevation snow indicate it is only about 70% of the average for this date.

This frozen reservoir, which accounts for a significant portion of the state's water as it thaws later in the year, is an essential component for the year ahead. Hydrology managers have emphasized that it is premature to make predictions for the annual water supply.

“What we are observing right now is more rain than snow,” commented a hydrology section chief. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to pick up by April 1st so that we’re closer to average.”

Although the monitor is entirely green, the next challenge is to maintaining this positive water situation during the coming seasons.
