Alcaraz Set to Compete Against Amateurs in Million Dollar Single-Point Showdown

Everyday tennis enthusiasts are being offered the chance to earn a seven-figure prize when they compete against world-class athletes - headed by world number one the Spanish champion - in a winner-takes-all point leading up to the year's first major

Event planners of the Australian Open have revealed the Million Dollar One Point Slam, which will match 10 amateur players against top-ranked players in a single-elimination format at the Australian Open venue

The Unique Event Will Work

Players will play 'the classic hand game' to determine who serves or receives, and the player who wins the point will move forward to the next round

The champion of the event will take home approximately half a million pounds

By comparison, players who made it to the semi-finals of the primary tournaments in the 2025 Australian Open won A$1.1m

Previous Comparable Tournaments

The US Open staged a revamped, standalone mixed doubles tournament in late summer which prompted top singles players to participate, with the victors receiving $1m

The year's first major held its debut One Point Slam this year, but the cash prize was A$60,000 and it had limited exposure

Andrey Rublev was the sole elite competitor competing, and his progress came to an end when he put the single service opportunity permitted into the net in his last eight match

Competition Information

Officials have not specified precisely how the event will function, but it is projected to mirror a similar format to the previous version

The elite players will be granted to serve once and the amateurs two times - as is the norm in standard play

While it is unclear how the draw will work, there will be five knockout rounds and the location will be the Rod Laver Arena rather than the secondary venue

The concluding rounds will be held in a night session instead of midday timing

Participation Requirements

Any Australians - or international players who have signed up with Tennis Australia - can enter 'One Point Slam' competitions at their community centers

The winners of the local competitions will then go into a draw, with a single non-professional from every region and area picked to take part in the 'championship round' in a night session on mid-January

There will also be a entry tournament in December which everyday players, developing professionals, well-known figures and sport stars can compete in

It begins on the starting date and the pair of champions will advance to the midweek 'grand finale' with the other eight amateurs and top-ranked athletes

Event organizers stated there were "further celebrities to be unveiled imminently", while the official website mentioned "well-known figures" would be involved
